War is Love’ is this Season’s Must-Watch Rom-Com

Kaguya-sama: Love is War is looking to cement itself as this season’s must-watch romance. The premise is simple:

Kaguya-sama: Love is War

Kaguya-sama: War is Love reinvigorates the crowded rom-com genre by playing around with common tropes. Kaguya and Miyuki not only lead the student council, but they are the school’s top students. There’s a natural attraction between them, but their pride prevents them from confessing to each other.

This leads to a hilarious “love war” as they try to coax a confession from their would-be love. What would be a typical, flowery scene in most rom-com turns into grimy psychological musings as they overanalyze their interactions. This leads to absurd moments of the two trying to out-think each other and dwell on simple conversations. It’s a unique twist that highlights Kaguya and Miyuki’s emotional immaturity despite being perfect students.

Kaguya and Mizuki aren’t the only worthwhile characters — Chika is a total scene stealer. Her bubbly personality is the perfect contrast to Kaguya’s calculating mind, which leads Chika to push Kaguya towards her goals.

The anime’s episode structure consists of three vignettes, which adapts a full chapter each. This allows the pacing to be tight and crisp, preventing the staff from stretching out jokes or relying on filler.

Of course, Kaguya-sama: Love is War is beautiful to look at due to changing tones and scene composition. It’s a rom-com with the visual style of a psychological-thriller!

Kaguya-sama: Love is War is off to a strong start and anyone with a remote interest in rom-coms should check it out.
